    Colorado changes 2023

They reduced Cow Tags from 3,500 in those GMU's to 250 tags for the second and third seasons. The Bull tags are still OTC and unlimited, but the season has been cut to five days. (For bull tags only. The cow tags, if you can get one, allow you to hunt the full season.) Good luck.

    Colorado Winter

This is a note from CPW concerning the proposed 40% cut in tags. Hope this helps. Thank you for contacting Colorado Parks and Wildlife. I understand you are inquiring about the reduction of quota in the Northwest region. If the suggested quotas are approved, these reductions will impact 1st...

    Puffer coat for glassing?

You may want to look at Enlightened Equipment. Their jacket seems perfect for what you described.

    Colorado elk costs rise

For those hunting in Colorado, the price of Elk licenses have risen across the board. Bull Tags have risen by $60 to $760.99 and Cow tags are now the same price. That is a $234 increase for cow tags. I thought this was a misprint, but after speaking with a Colorado outfitter, this is a correct...

    Public Service Announcement

Sage advice, I wish I had it around 25 years ago. A friend and I were at a bar in Silverthorne, CO when two of these urchins tried to sell their cookies at the bar. The manager wouldn't let them in, but did borrow all of their cookies and then put them up for bid...one box at a time. Those...

    Colorado trail?

I hiked the AT in 1966. It wasn't as long as it is today. Only 2,000 miles back then. Ha. The key for me was starting slow each day and then after I warmed up I would increase my pace to around 3 miles an hour. Also, when I got tired, I rested or stopped for the day. On a three to five day...

    Bell tent vs wall tent?

Had to look up what a Bell tent was. They look very nice, but not very roomy until you get into the larger sizes. If you are going to put in three cots, stove and some gear, for that cost point, I would go with a Davis tent. I have a Davis tent that I love, but don't use much any more. I have...

What're you doing on rigs who's manual says "no chains up front"?

I have a Ford F-250 diesel 4X4 and use the diamond pattern flat chain on both the front and rear. The problem with using them with a diesel on the front tires is the torque. You can rip them off if you try to use too much power.

Good tent for 3rd season elk CO

I've used a Mr. Buddy heater in my 6 person Cabela's Instinct tent at 8,450ft during the third season in Colorado for years. I also have a Davis canvas tent I used to use. At 74, the canvas tent has become too heavy to set up by myself and not nearly as warm.

    Colorado Units 12/24

J Bar H Outfitters will have five drop camps and two guided tent camps in GMU 12. They are on the north border, but have camps up to a four hour horse ride away. Almost to GMU 24. There are still plenty of hunters in this area. The presence of elk depends on the weather. If there is littler or...

Colorado bowhunters, please grab a bear tag too

I also received not one, but two requests to purchase a bear tag for the third season. The last one, which I got this past Friday, said the cost would be $50 for my area since I have two elk tags. (Bull and Cow) I looked it up and there are 888 available in the area I hunt, so there is no rush...

Does this type of hunt exist? (Self Guided cow elk)

There are several GMU's in Colorado that have leftover Cow Tags for third and sometimes, forth season. You can pick them up after August in many GMU's.
