If you want out of the brush you'll need to go east of the cascades. West of the cascades your only options are clear cuts or alpine areas which aren't abundant and during the high hunt get lots of pressure.
Personally, I got east when I can and then hunt clear cuts behind closed gates now...
I would upgrade your binos to a better 10x42 before looking at spotting scopes. Even then, you may not like using one. I own two and they rarely get any use. 99.9% of my time is spent with my 8X42s. Only time my spotters come out is the range and when I spot an animal and want a closer look...
I usually wear my base layers unless I'm soaked. If I'm soaked I wear all my clothes as in the night they'll dry out in my bag. I used to pack an extra set of base layers to sleep in but stopped because it was just extra weight I was carrying around.
Take a class on map and compass or find someone willing to teach you. I use my GPS to mark important things like camp and where a downed animal is, but new terrain I rely on my compass and my wits.
