    FILM act

Outfitters do pay 3% of the hunt cost to the USFS or BLM plus 6% state sales tax here in Idaho. For a few years outfitters could be credited for the work they did on the forest- trail clearing, but that was short lived.

    Stoking the fire

I have been guiding hunts for 35 years and am all business when working. Hunting on my own though many times turns into aimless wandering, napping in the sun, staring off into the distance and watching the dogs enjoy themselves.

2024 Take Back Your Elk Report

I would hardly call the ranchers I know as getting greasy money or being part of the thin slice of the top. They mostly work their bottoms off to keep the ranch solvent. The increase in cattle prices has been very helpful.

    AZ auction tags going away

That is one of the most astute observations I have ever read on Hunt Talk.

    Attn. Idaho NR's

I have been an outfitter and guide in Idaho for over 35 years but retired now. In the areas we worked there were no other hunters, none. When I started in the 80's we would sometimes have other camps around us, ranchers and farmers who had stock, but from 2000 on there was no one in the...

Screwing over the Non-resident (or not)?

I like the idea of a merit based system for NR tags. As a guide for 35 years, I sure wish I could choose who would shoot the bull of a lifetime and whose hunt consisted of nothing but bad weather and poor luck. Earning the opportunity to hunt is attractive. How to coordinate, implement and...

I guess this is why wildlife belongs to the states citizens, so it can be managed in a way best suited to the particular state. Definitely not a one size fits all proposition. Thank you.

I am not talking about depredation payments but the ability to recover some of those costs directly from license holders, ie; the public hunter.

Tell that to the ranchers in Colorado who just had wolves turned loose on them. The ranch referred to in New Mexico had no elk when he bought it from his father in law. He now has to run generators to keep his solar wells pumping all night to water the elk as well as his cows- on his private...

Iowa SF255 NR tags going to outfitters.

I am not familiar with Iowa. I grew up in Central Minnesota where I was often asked which of my grandpa's sons I was a child of when I was asking for permission to hunt or trap. They just looked at me and before I opened my mouth they knew what family to which I belonged. All those fellows are...

Does the wildlife and any use or benefit belong only to those who buy hunting licenses or the citizenry as a whole? Your position always seems to have the sole beneficiaries to be active resident hunters and not those who may own the wildlife but do not hunt. You advocate managing for a small...

NM Outfitters Draw (Resident vs Non Resident)

Non-residents are not guaranteed a percentage but may draw up to a certain percentage.

Yes, many thousands of acres and have elk, deer and upland birds.

I don't. I found good hunting for free while living in South Texas where there is virtually no public ground and almost every inch of private ground is leased. I now live in Idaho which is 66% public ground and people complain about not having a place to hunt.
