Hey everyone,
Like all of us on this forum, I am passionate about public land preservation and access. After spending way too many years in school getting my PhD in environmental-related science I want to put my skills to work advancing this cause. Does anyone know of any groups (federal, state, non-profit, etc.) with a need for science communication? I appreciate any suggestions anyone might have.

I am in a similar boat, but about to have a PhD in entomology- ag related. hoping I can stretch that into public land stuff. I would keep an eye on usajobs, as well as state websites. Jobs with the non-profit groups don't seem too frequent, but may open up occasionally, and are on their websites. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if any of the major job boards would have those listed.

Don't over look opportunities with Joint Ventures. The Intermountain West Joint Venture is headquartered in Montana but positions don't come available that often. I would start networking at much as possible as some jobs are all about who you know.

Lots of non-profits hiring right now across a variety of fields and disciplines. Pick a group, look for those opportunities, and hustle. It's a competitive field and often not lucrative.

State and Fed jobs are going to be scarce due to budget constraints and mandatory vacancy savings/slashing agencies (DOI alone wants to remove a few thousand jobs).

I know nothing of these, but I have seen them advertised on a local listserve.

Also on the listserve: "I made a silly “Bozeman”mistake today and stashed my black Patagonia down sweater hoody in the wrong Subaru!" These may be your people.

There are lots of environmental NGOs around Bozeman/Livingston, Missoula, and Helena, but I don't know if a PhD will help, unless it is in fundraising.

Thanks for all of the great feedback. I'm currently with the EPA in OK on a term contract that is running up.... not the greatest time to be trying to join DoI or EPA.

Ha! Not a good time indeed. After 12 years of service, looks like I'll be unemployed in a couple months as well. 1100 positions lost so far in my agency. Neither science nor communication are popular these days.

Saw this posting this morning. Typical rural western pay, but you don't see many science communication type things very often.

if you are not geographically restricted you may have more options. Some of the non-profits or NGO's might be in a better financial position - the proposed FY19 budget looks abysmal for fed land management agencies (though coming from EPA, maybe not :)). Good luck on the search!

Very true. If you go this route, I would recommend finding a good woman with a good salary, if that is important to you. Money can buy some level of happiness.
