One Less Wolf in Idaho

I finally got around to summarizing our Idaho deer hunt. Although deer were our intended quarry, no deer were harmed during the hunt. We did however somehow manage to be at the right place, at the right time and were able to harvest a beautiful male wolf. We both knew they were in the area and each of us had purchased a wolf tag "just in case". All the stars lined up on the first full day of our hunt. I'm sure the local deer and elk herds will appreciate the fact that there is one less wolf to worry about, but they won't be able to let down their guard as there are plenty more to go around. As for deer, we saw quite a few does and small bucks, but nothing worthy of a ride back to Oregon. The weather was warm and rainy and we even had a thunderstorm on Sunday evening, Oct. 28. I hadn't hunted the area since 2002, but it was nice to get back and see how much it hadn't changed. Saw a nice chocolate colored black bear and a couple fairly decent bighorn rams during the hunt as well. Lots of grouse around and we didn't hesitate in reducing the population. Anyhow, enjoy the photos and good luck to those who still have tags in their pockets.

Wow! Great trip! Thanks for sharing the photos. I take it you did not have a black bear tag or are they not in season for the area you were in? Nice wolf!

Sounds like fun. That looks like a HUGE grouse to me. Is that a blue grouse?

BTW, what is the make and model of your tent? Do you like it? I'm shopping for one to use when truck camping.

Outstanding share...congrats on the wolf. Nice weapon.

My son and I open fired roasted a few quail like that when he was 11. He still talks about how good they tasted...I remember as well

Sytes, bear season was open and I could have used my deer tag on the bear. It wasn't a very large bear and I really didn't feel like skinning one out in the rain.

BrentD, the grouse in the photo is a ruffed grouse and probably the largest one I've ever shot. We did shoot some blue grouse, just didn't get any real good photos of them. Saw lots of chukars as well and next year I may bring one of my GSP's along and take a day or two to hunt chukars.

Cool on the wolf and great pics. But my word that is a huge looking grouse with an absolutely beautiful fan! Ruffed grouse are the only game I refuse to share. Grilled and stuck with a kabob stick with a thick piece of bacon, heavenly aspens is that good.

Chukarman,

Yes, the wolf was all alone. He was a 2.5 year old male that probably just got kicked out of the pack and was looking for a territory of his own.
