Man, the plot thickens each time this silly story is investigated further....

“We did not have permission to hunt on private land,” Daines said, although the ranch caretaker, Matt Lumley, had provided him with the combination to the gate to allow them to drive uphill across the ranch for about 2 miles to the forest boundary, saving them the uphill climb of about 800 feet in elevation that public land hunters face from the Donahue Trail parking lot.

Daines said he has never met Smith, the ranch’s owner, but has hunted with Lumley before and has hunted wolves on the ranch in the past. Lumley is the regional director for Big Game Forever, a Utah-based organization co-founded by Don Peay. Peay was quoted in a 2012 article referring to the North American wildlife model, wherein the public owns the wildlife, as socialism.
