Planning on my first black bear hunt in PA. Most are in the 200 lb range, but i have pics of some 400 lb ish.
They can get considerably larger. 600lb + shot the other year.
I have heard of people bear hunting with 25-06.
I was wondering the concensus of the board about using my 257 Roberts?
Yay
Or Nay?

Thank You for your input.

I hunt bear in Alaska, so we have black and brown bear, not saying the .257 wouldn't get the job done, but I would choose a bigger caliber. We usually carry .308 to .338 on our hunts.

Depends no how you can shoot the 257.
I use a 6mm rem for bear in Montana.
Your just not going to be able to crush through a front shoulder maybe.
If you hit the heart ,which is WAY lower then any other game, or a good DDL lung shot,
The 257 is plenty. Just try and ramp up the 257 in speed and don't over weight it with a to heavy bullet.
But a well constructed bullet and get a bunch of trigger time at different ranges and you will have a bear
story to tell us.

The shooting at different ranges is a non issue. I shoot all my rifles year round at ranges from 25 yards to 500 yards.
Rifle in question is a Ruger 77 MKII shooting +P.
I'm thinking the 115gr. Partition at 2,973 fps avg.
Maybe backing that up with 120gr. HPBT GameKing at 2,893fps avg.
