Of a snooty 16 gauge SxS is now complete. I chipped the buttstock on my Sauer two years ago, and still hadn’t refinished it after it was repaired. I stripped it down and degreased it to get all the residual gun oil out. When it dried I found this crack.

In a panic I contacted Bill Sporcich aka the Stockmaker. He told me no problem, but I’m three months out. Shit! I abandoned all pride and begged and groveled, even offering a bottle of fine whiskey. Bill took pity on my sorry hide and told me if I redid the checkering he could have it back quick.

Stained and a couple coats of oil.

How do you like your counter tops? I've been trying to talk my wife into cement countertops for a year or so now.

P.S. - Nice gun.

Love them. Only complaint is slight chipping on the edge around the sink and a couple of cracks. Not sure either is preventable, and I would do them again. We did a very large counter top for about $1300.

If I could afford this stuff, I would certainly be able to afford going to the sheep show in Reno :)

Apologies for thread derailment, but I have my late grandpa’s 60s era Model 700 and it deserves a stock refurbishment much like this one. Any suggestions for a jumping off point in terms of a book or quality instruction? I’d love to fix it up and give it to my dad.

Post some pictures of it and we can give you some relatively intelligent advice.

It’ll have to wait until tomorrow night after the kids go down. There are some decent scratches in the stock, but no big cracks so I imagine it wouldn’t take much. I’ve refinished some wood furniture before, but nothing like this. The stock had a fairly high-gloss finish that I would want to tone-down to matte. Probably put a new recoil pad on. The barrel and action will also need to be reblued, maybe cerakoted, but I’d obviously take it to a professional for that. I’ll post pictures tomorrow night. It’s the only free time I get. Thank you!

Beautiful job on the stock! Well done!

Looks more like a butt plate than a recoil pad to me. Lol
