Public land rules

Not sure if this is the correct place to post this, but is there a site that has all the public land rules? BLM, foreat service, state of Montana, state of Colorado, etc?

Is it legal to camp anywhere on BLM land? From what i see it appears so, but cant find any concrete rules, just more hear say stuff. Also they talk about tents, can you place a camper off any road anywhere on BLM lands?

What do you mean by "all the rules?" Are you concerned with camping? Are you concerned with discharging a firearm? Are you concerned with non-toxic ammunition requirements? Are you concerned with water access? Each type of public land has various requirements for sportsmen, depending on the activity, the state/local/land management policies.

If you're just talking camping...

Generally there is no problem camping in undeveloped sites on BLM or USFS land for up to 14 days. However, regional offices may have camping restrictions due to fire or flood risks, restoration areas, etc. You should check the website of the regional management office or call them for the latest info. And follow any posted signage.

State lands are even more complicated. Many western states prohibit camping on state land. Some allow it during certain times (e.g., hunting season). Others allow it only on leased land with written permission from the leasee. It's complicated.

All of this is why there is no single source with ALL the rules. They vary seasonally and regionally. They vary by state. They vary by management agency by the designation of land (e.g., Wilderness, Monuments, Wildlife Refuges, State Game Management Areas, etc...all have unique rules). Public land use is complicated for those unfamiliar with it. Just do your research (Google is your friend) and don't be afraid to call the management agency with questions. They're friendly folks. But it's ultimately your responsibility to know the rules for the land you're using.
