Any pointers for someone from Denver who may wander north on the 15th to try their hand at sage grouse? Any general areas to try or other tips would be appreciated. I've never hunted them before.

If you're real motivated to get one, go west.. Last night driving home from looking for antelope we saw about 30 along the dirt road in a 2-300 yard stretch.

We've seen them all over sage brush areas. Fairly limited experience, but in our year and a half of seeing them (we've seen maybe 30-40 groups while walking around in BLM) it seems like they like the top side of slopes. Don't get too far from water, within a mile or so. Last year we ended up accidentally truck hunting for them, as we were driving out to check out a spot we saw a group on the road so jumped out and was able to get one. The couple other times we tried that they flushed before we were anywhere close, I think they'd already been hunted.

Take your pick: 1. Laramie to Medicine Bow, north on highway 487 to highway 77, north to county road 102(Leo-Shirley Basin road), west to county road 102(Dry Creek road), north starting at the second cattle guard on both sides of the road and along side roads, or south of the Shirley Rim road(east off highway 77 side roads south, or north of highway 487 east of where the rim road intersects). Use binoculars to check places away from the road rather than randomly walking, then go flush the birds. First thing in the morning and just before evening they will be near roads. 2. Highway 130, Snowy Range highway, west over the Snowy Range to highway 230, north to Saratoga, west on the Jack Creek road to the Twin Groves road, west to the Rawlins-Sandstone(Sage Creek) road. South to big block of state land around Tullis just north of the Med Bow Forest boundary, or north to the McCarty Canyon road, then southwest to side roads going west to the heads of Cow Creek, Wild Cow Creek, Cherokee Creek, and Rendle Rim/Butte. Blue Grouse in the Med Bow Forest. BLM maps or GPS helps.
