G'day,

I'm aware that I can't hunt alaska diy, which is a damned shame as it's always been the number one place on my bucket list to visit and hunt. I know a guy who did a moose hunt recently and by the time he had it home it cost around $35k AUD. In addition to my preference for hunting diy i don't have the $35,000 to do a moose or sheep hunt lying around nor could i justify spending it on that if i did. That cost in itself could literally pay for an annual diy hunt to nz for the rest of my life.

I know it once was possible as plenty of older aussies have written articles about diy hunting there.

My question to anyone who knows is what caused the change? For me it's a real bummer to know that the place I'd love to hunt above all others I'll simply never afford to visit in this lifetime.

Curious as to why it is what it is.

The answer is simple. Money. The rational is disguised under the pretense of nonresident or aliens not knowing or following the regulations, and or getting hurt because they are not prepared, which is just silly. Very few countries allow DIY hunting for hunting.

It would take legislation to change it, and that's very difficult to do, especially when it means losing money.

Well that makes a fair amount of sense, albeit disappointing. I won't hold my breath for a chance things will change in the future then.

Tip my hat to the lower 48 in that respect, I'm obviously too used to being spoiled here in Aus and NZ!

If you want to hunt Alaska DIY you can but only for small game, no big game. Hunting is about the adventure and exploring new places. I duck hunt Alaska every year DIY in remote places and still get the big adventure of a big game hunt without the big dollar$. I know it's a long ways for you but if you ever want to join me you can.
