I loaded it behind some 139grn Interlocks in 7mm-HT and 165grn Scirocco II's in .308. I was surprised at the velocities I was getting in both calibers. I've mostly used Varget so far and the H4895 was pretty zippy by comparison. My groups weren't great. Both test batches came out with a couple 5 shot groups about 1.5 MOA. I've hunted with factory ammo about that accurate, but still, not what I got into hand loading for. But I was surprised by the speed. I figured I'd get higher MVs with Varget since its a slower burning powder. I guess these powders have different qualities besides just burn rate but that's the one I always think about.

Both those rifles seem to like Accubonds in different loads. I'm going to try ABs with the H4895 next time I get some time.

If H4895 is giving you speed, keep feeding it until you get pressure. If you are on the low end of charge weight, accuracy might settle in as velocity increases. mtmuley

I was wondering that a little. I'd have look at my notes to say what my charges were (I'm at a softball game right now) but I wasn't getting pressure signs. Primers came out a little flat on the 7mm, but that was it.

I'm a speed freak, and I've had bullets that had great accuracy at starting loads come back around when at max, or sometimes over. Just be careful and pay attention. mtmuley

I'll second what mtmuley said, most of the time there is an accuracy node at the low end and another near max.

I've become a huge fan of this powder. I'm now loading 140 accubonds for my 7mm-08, 180 Speer Hot Cors for my .30-06 and low recoil loads for my kids using 145 Speer Hot Cors in the 7mm-08 and 150 Speer BTSP in .308, all with H 4895. It's literally the only powder I have to use for all of my current loads. And, that's not due to any preference for it, it's due to accuracy and versatility. Temp insensitivity and being easy to find are bonuses!

H4895 is a great powder. I've used it to push 120 gn Barnes ttsx and 140 gn sierras in the 7mm-08 with great results. The ability to load for reduced recoil for my kids is an added bonus.

What velocities are you getting?

I didn't take the time to average them but my best groups with the 7-08 were a little over 2800fps. Highest load was about 2920 but it wasn't exactly a tight group. 3 inches or so.

Best group with the .308 was 2708fps. Didn't get much of an increase as I went higher, highest charge was about 2750. Kicked like a mule.

Brian,
While i haven't used H4895, i've done a lot of load development with my 7mm-08, 7mm-08AI.
Your speeds of 2800fps are about what i'm getting from my 22"barrel with IMR4350, H414, and PP2000 with 140gr Ballistic Tips.
For standard 7mm-08 i'd say your 2920 is really pushing it.
I can squeeze 2,916 fps average with my AI and RL17.

If your getting flatened primers, it's time to back off.

Thanks for the reply. I got 2800fps with RL16 using 140 grain Accubonds. Big Game gave me 2860fps using 140 grain Accubonds. These are in a 20” barrel in my 7-08. So, your velocities seem to be right in line.

I’ve seen H4895 listed in a lot of places and always wondered how it did. Thanks for the updates.

I'm using RL17 in my 7mm Mauser AI w/140 gain TTSX's (w/ a velocity of 3050 fps). It's a great powder for efficient cartridges & mid-bores. Agree on flattened primers and pushing the edge on the speed of the 7mm-08.

Most of my H4895 loads are with older cartridges, but I've had good luck with it in 308 out of a 20 inch barrel. It's a good powder, keep fiddling with it and you'll find the sweet spot. Are you doing ladder testing?

I do for all my loads.
7mm-08AI is a rifle of the past for now. Throat got too long. It is now a 250 Savage.

Sorry, I meant that for Brian.

How do you like the 250? Been toying with the idea of 257 Roberts AI on a Turkish Mauser action if I don't turn it into an 8x60S

Oops... Sorry..

I like the 250 Savage so far. Still working up loads for it. The 24" barrel makes the Stevens 200 a little longer, but still nice light carrying rifle. Waiting for the rain to stop so i can do some chrono work with 100gr Ballistic Tips, and 90gr Sierra BlitzKings.

I have a Ruger 77MKII in 257 Roberts. Absolutely love that rifle/caliber combination!
I'm using necked down 7X57 PPU casing, Hybrid100V.
Shoots 75gr HP, 90gr BlitzKing, 100,115gr BT, 115 Berger VLD well.
I'd have no issues taking a poke to 500 yards with it.

No, I've never tried a ladder test. So far I'm just using load data from a manual or on line, usually starting 10% below the max load or thereabout, and load test batches - 5 shot groups, each one .5 grains higher than the last. I'm still pretty new to this and I've done some reading on ladder testing, but haven't tried it yet.

In my 7-08 I've been wanting to try Nosler AB's w/ Ramshot Big Game, and Hornady ELD-X with Varget. I may start with a ladder test on those.

I shot some test loads this morning using 165grn Accubonds in my .308 with H4895. I didn't get through them all but had some good results. 42 grains produce a group that was 4 shots practically in the same hole with one outlier a half inch away. The velocity averaged 2660. Max deviation was 32fps. Posting a pic. I may take this one hunting.

43.5 grains was a 5 shot group just a little over an inch, like 1.2, with an average velocity of 2764. Max deviation- 52 fps.

I don't know if I'm using the right terminology. Talking about the difference between the lowest and highest MV.

I’d shoot that one again just for kicks. Was the one out your fifth shot? Good shooting.
