Hey check out www.bhphotovideo.com for a spotter. They include a free vortex tripod with the vortex stuff and usually sell it under retail.
I picked up a Vortex Diamondback 20-60x60 for $360 and they threw in a Vortex Summit Tripod (Worth $130) for free. Didn't charge tax or shipping.

Lots of good comparisons on the ED50 and Vortex Razor 50mm out there on the birding web sites. Comparisons on the Nikon 50mm and Vortex 60mm might be more difficult to find.
