Hello all looking for any info on a unit I could draw with 1 point wanting to take my son who just turned 12 we tried to draw deer in Montana but struck out I live in northern ca. just want a decent hunt able to see lots of game
thanks Robert

With one point it's going to difficult to draw a good unit even if you apply for the special. Most one point units will have difficult access. Look at the link jtm307 posted, it will tell you which ones you can draw with one point. Then you need to do some research on public land access. If you're don't care about horns maybe a doe hunt would work for you.

Gohunt has 32 units you can draw with 1 pt. If you aren't looking for booners, there is plenty of land and goats to chase on. Trespass fees can get you on game a little easier, but there is a lot of BLM.

Difficult access is all relative. A 1 point unit in the regular or special draw will get you a very fun hunt. With a little research, you should have no problem finding plenty of antelope. Grab a couple doe tags so your hunt isn’t over an hour after it starts.

Any input on units?

I think getting replies showing you where can find odds for units is a great start for you. Several units can only be drawn in the random pass if you have 1 or fewer points so that is a hard draw with odds around 1 in 100 so your application would likely not result in a tag. You want to look at the units that awarded tags with 1 or less points. Expect some point creep so might want to list a second choice that could be drawn in 2017 as a 2nd choice. Likely you will draw a non-resident buck tag in 2018 with that strategy.

You probably know this but you have to choose whether to apply for the higher priced buck tag (Special) or the lower priced buck tag (Regular). Fewer tags awarded in the Special Pronghorn Buck draw but the higher price tends to result in getting a tag with less points, but not always, than if applied in the Regular draw. Once the tag is in hand, other than price, the tag is exactly the same.

Look in the SE corner and then along the eastern edge as go north. Several units there you can draw if applicant behavior mirror 2017 which is no guarantee. If a big pronghorn buck was shot in one of those "low point" units then the number of applicants and their point totals could jump, for example.

Lots of private land to work around in the SE. Some public land is landlocked so not accessible. Some roads leading to public land are private. Some public land does not hold pronghorn in the SE and some public land holds pronghorn in the SE but once the shooting starts the pronghorn run until no longer bumped which tends to be private land, usually contracted to outfitters. Outfitters charge from around $1000 to $2500 in the SE zone.

As mentioned in other comments in this thread, there are units you should be able to draw. Might take a trip or two to figure out how to hunt a particular unit which is how most of the non-resident hunters figure out WY. Part of the adventure is figuring out a good unit then being a bit secretive so remains a unit you have a chunk or two of public land with pronghorn. Does not take much sharing to overwhelm a honey hole. Good luck with your research!
