Everything I've learned about shooting has been read, self taught or learned from buddies. Would be neat to spend a couple days with a pro, getting some real hands on training, and would be a fun off season vacation too. Any recommendations for someplace where a guy might spend a couple days getting some professional instruction with his own rifle and optics to learn better field technique to improve hunting accuracy? I don't have any real interest in 1,000 yard stuff, just practical hunting ranges, out to 500 or so. Thanks !

There's a guy on another forum that used to teach exactly that. Wish I would have gotten in on that. He may/may not be talked into doing one, but Uncle Sam keeps him busy...

Some of the more 'famous' gun schools like Gunsite have classes like this. https://www.gunsite.com/course-offerings/rifle/ Here's one in IL. http://thesitetraining.com/courses Two of their offerings look like that may be something like your asking about.

Most of the ones you'll see are geared more towards long range though.

Potomac Montana (near Missoula)This is not a school but it is one with practical applications where a guy can come out and shoot and have a lot of fun while at the same time honing his skills. They have a precision rifle for longer applications out to I think 1375 yards and a hunter course with shots ranging from 75 out to roughly 450 if I recall correctly. I believe it is 40 rounds fired at steel plates and it's either a hit or a miss. I'm going to do it this year a few times. They do it the third Saturday of the month starting in April through about October.

Libby MT. This is a safari course that would be fun as well. Not really what you are looking for, but if you shoot a big boomer it would be a kick in the pants.

They have shoots in just about every state, a weekend Marksmanship Clinic or Bootcamp that teaches all the basic rifle marksmanship fundamentals and polishes the skills, like Uncle Sammy's BRM condensed into two days. You can even do it with just a .22; they use reduced size targets at 25 yards to simulate targets all the way out to 400 yards. I've been to a couple and really enjoyed them. Even an old dog can learn a new trick or two.

I've been waiting to do this.
