On my shelf, I have H4350, Varget, and H4895. So currently I have a slow-ish burner, a medium burn, and a faster burning powder. I'm looking to try different things in 7mm-08 and .308, and I just got a .270 die set. Any recommendations on other useful powders to have around for the calibers mentioned?

Big Game for the 7-08

RL26 for the 270. I get in the mid 2900s with 150 grain Partitions in a 22" barrel.

RL16 has done well in 7-08 and 270, as well.

+1 for H4831, but get H4831SC, it is supposed to measure out better than traditional H4831. SC is for "short cut" - same powder, small extruded segments.

Varget does very well in the .308, imr 4064 is extremely accurate in my rifle. Doesn't meter very well though.

Can't help you on the 270, but RL-15 and 4064 are always on my 'gotta try' list for the 7/08 & 308. (velocities will vary)

I can see where H4831(sc) would probably be a good contender for the 270 though, from my experience with the 7RM. Somewhat similar in overall case capacity/ bullet diameter dynamics. It worked very well in my 7RM.

RL15 and H4831

My favorite load for 270 is a 140gr Accubond on top of 58.0 gr of H4831. Turns my cheap Ruger American into a sud MOA game slayer.

Your H4350 and Varget should work great on the 308 and 7mm-08. There are some other really good powders for those also.

The 270 and H4831SC seem to be a match made in heaven. 130 gr. Accubonds or Partitions using between 58-62 grains seems to be a sweet spot. Of course work up you loads from below. H4350 and IMR4350 are two more good ones for the 270.

Wanted to throw out some updates:

I started to get pressure signs with the 7mm-08 about 47.0 grains of IMR 4350. I'd say 46.0 is the comfortable max for my gun which was on par with a lot of your recommendations.

Also acquired a good bit of other powder types and am going to keep experimenting to see what shoots best in my gun. So far 40.4 grains of Varget and 140 grain Sierra game kings has produced the best group but 45.8 grains of IMR4350 and a 139gr. Hornady Interlock seemed the most consistent.

The biggest problem i am having so far is trying to rule out barrel heat as the factory thats opening up the groups. In many of my groups the first were touching and its the 3rd and 4th that open it up.

Varget is my go-to powder for the 08. I've had great luck with it and 140 gn Partitions and Gamekings.

I've had good results with H4895 and 120 gn Barnes ttsx and I've also used 4064 with success.

For my son's hunting load, we run 41.5 gn of Varget pushing 140 partitions seated .020" off the lands. This load produces 1/2" groups and kills the heck out of stuff.

Question...
Your original post you sais H4350. Your update you said IMR 4350. Which is it, as they are different powders with different burn rates? 47.0 gr. of H4350 will give you pressure signs.

From my experience RL17 will give you your highest velocities out of the 7mm-08 and 270.
Within 500 yards it shoots acceptably. Some complain it's temp sensitive. Do your load workups when it's warm and you don't have to worry about it with any powder.

Since i've started shooting 600+ yards i have gone to Alliant Power Pro 2000.
Getting 2, 836 fps with very low extreme spread and a standard deviation of 2 fps.
That's with 20 rounds over the chrono.

I actually replied to the wrong thread! My post was also titled something like this one and clicked in the wrong spot. Sorry about hijacking the thread, but to answer your question I was using IMR4350

H4831 and 270Win = peanut butter and jelly. (130 and 140gr bullets).

708 I've had success with Varget and RL15 with 120gr and 140gr pills.

Good Luck and Be Safe,
