Stewardship Project in Northern Wisconsin

Good article.... Its true that the Nature Conservancy (NC) does have stigma of a "tree hugging" organization but that's far from what they do. At least in Minnesota, most purchases of ecological significant properties happens through the NC and later gets transfer to the state to manage. Much of this management can be timber harvest, prescribed burns, etc. It is also a great benefit to the state because the NC has the funds at a moments notice to make a purchase of a property that will benefit the ecosystem, sensitive species, and/or the hunter/fisherman. This is not always practical for the state to do because appropriating funds and making purchases at the state level can be time consuming and difficult in a short time frame in which some properties are sold. Many organizations such as pheasants forever and the ruffed grouse society also participate in obtaining properties that later get handed to the state to manage.
