Missouri boy here looking to tag my first Rio in Kansas this spring. Started Scouting on OnX Maps. According to NWTF to get a true Rio you pretty much have to stay west of Wichita. It looks like there are a couple of good conservation areas, but all of the websites say high pressure. Any advice or anything I should know? Tips and tricks welcome

Pretty decent map off of GoHunt page to show general distribution of the subspecies:

The area around Hutchinson (south central Kansas) shows what happened when the eastern subspecies was transplanted along the Arkansas (Ar-kan-sas in Kansas!!) river.

The website is still sporting the 2017 WIHA, but the areas generally don't change up too much.

Some good reading for you from HuntTalk:

Couple of helps: buy the combo before 4/1 and save $7.50. NR must show proof of hunters safety. Permethrin treat your clothing versus creepy crawly. Remember that even more than Missouri.......if you don't like the weather, wait 15 minutes. Layers at the ready for anywhere from 25 degrees and freezing rain/snow to highs over 100.....in the same week!

Thanks for the info! I’ve read several of your post, it sounds like you’re the Kansas turkey guru. We were going to attempt to tag out in Missouri first. In your opinion, would we be better off coming early in the season or later on? A friend of mine hunted an area last year and didn’t see another hunter. But the first 3 days were during the week.
