I am looking to buy a new archery release and have heard a lot of things about both types of release. Is it a user preference or is there an actual difference between the two?

There are a myriad of types of releases. Index, thumb, back tension, hinge, resistance activated etc. And many styles within each of those types. If you are referring to index releases (I am assuming here) there are single caliper, double caliper, and string loop. I prefer the string loop type for hunting as I can find the D-loop with my fingers so I don't take my eyes off my target. Go to a pro shop that has demos you can try and shoot a bunch until you find the one that suits you. What works for one person probably won't work for someone else, but the index string loop type is a great place to start.
