Hi guys! I’m going to be visiting Reno in April for a work trip and have set aside a few extra days to do some hiking. I love shed hunting, curious if anyone has any recommendations on public areas around the Reno area that are more secluded for shed hunting. I’m a female in my 20s and will be hiking alone, so any advice is helpful! Thanks in advance.

It is hard to go in to a new place blind. Some times it works out some times it doesn't. I have never been to Nevada. This is what I would do if I was going. First get on the net and google winter range near Reno. Once you have found the winter range get on Google Earth and look for steep south facing slopes that others will not want to walk on. My favorite are south facing slopes that have ridges that also have a small amount of north facing slope. This type of mountain side gives deer the best of both. A south facing slope to feed and get warm in the sun and timber to provide cover from the wind and thermal cover on a cold night. I would find several places to look because some are sure to be a bust.
Once you get there look for tell tail signs of wintering big game. Browse lines, game trails are sure signs but also look for shed antlers in yards, game crossing signs on the highway and game proof fencing on ranchers hay yards.

Once you have found a likely spot all that is left is to get out and start wearing some of the sole off of your shoes. Good luck to you.

I would just plan on a hike shed hunting is way to popular now. I used to be able find at least one any day of the week any month of the year around Reno. I've been doing it for about 12 years and my how things have changed. Depending on snow falls and your vehicle it will be more challenging pm me and I give a not so secret spot. Ps no secret spots an hour within Reno.

Go north on 395 about 15 mins to Bordertown. Turn off at the casino to the west and drive up Long Valley rd to Dog Valley Rd. Another canyon is Balls Valley Rd, it makes a loop. This is nice deer country and just a pretty area that's quiet to hike around in.

FYI that spot is closed for mule deer migration from Jan1 till July 1 and that game warden loves to write trespassing tickets. My buddy's found out the hard way like 600 bucks. Somebody had taken down the signs before we went in and they went back a week later and got tickets. Glad I had to work that Saturday. I would say though it's probably been picked out already.

Long Valley and Dog Valley roads are closed? We go up in there all the time and I have never seen any signs. I made it to Dog Valley on the Mitchel Canyon rd last Saturday. We hike up on there and the back side of Peavine. I've never seen a game warden either.

Not peavine the balls cayon side the old green gulch ranch is a fish and game ranch. Ya it's closed both sides of 395 till the bug station.
