We came across this in San Juan (UT) years ago while hunting cow elk. The bull had fallen in and got hung up and died. The side of the hole was marred by bears trying to claw down to the carcass.

I contacted a Game Warden because I was worried about more animals or a person falling in the hole and he went out to it and said his best bet was an old vent tube from a mine shaft. He contacted somebody from the state of Utah and said they would fill in the hole with some sort of expanding foam. He also said they found a poached bear near the area so I told him the description of the vehicle I had seen nearby and he said it was a local rancher who was suspected to have poached bears in the past. I never heard what came of that though.
 
These poor bulls just have bad luck!!! Trees falling, ground caving in...........Next week someone will probably find one laying dead smashed by a Mars meteor space-rock.:D

One million years from now some archeologist will be scratching their head about that one.
