    Default 2017 Backpack Deer

I got to spend a few days doing my very favorite type of hunt this September, a backpack trip up high for mule deer. With lots of meat left in the freezer I had a chance to be picky. I hiked in to a general unit I'd been in a couple of years ago and set up shop.

For the first couple days the weather was kind of like this.

I glassed when I could but didn't see much; listened to a lot of music and drank a lot of tea. I saw a few smaller bucks like this one and one decent framed deer missing a back fork.

When the weather broke I carried on with my plan working some high basins. After finding a smaller buck bedded, this one and two others appeared. Aside from pretty heavy wind the shot was straightforward at 250; I held as needed and that was that.

I wound up camp the next morning and made it home in time for a late supper on my final day. It's about my favorite type of mule deer frame, and I'll sure enjoy looking at it over the years.

What a great story and a great deer, I'm impressed and jealous all at the same time! I recently fell in love with Mule Deer this is an inspiration. Great job!

I also found a bison skull up there, pretty decent shape really.

Super!! That's a great buck, congrats!! Love that new, high tech camo pattern. lol. I assume some flavor of a 6.5?

PS- You ought to make that hunt a challenge some year by taking a fat, flatlander with you...

That's typically a fair assumption but it's actually a .308 that's been shooting really well.

I'm always impressed with the quality of animals you consistently take, thanks for sharing.

I also think finding that bison skull up high is about as cool as your buck.
