Took the family and my 2 year old GSP Tye out for some wild bird training today. We decided to head to our nearest GEMS, the Mark Knee Memorial Grouse Enhanced Management Site. It is on state land in Osceola County, MI. It was established in 2016, it contains over 70% of the cover aspen in hilly and sometimes steep terrain. Here is a few photos from the trip.

We headed into some thicker stuff as we were not turning up anything in the clearings but the kids had a hard time traversing the slash from the clear cuts. The new aspens are coming up nice and even gave a nice snack along the way!

We stumbled upon a beaver pond and while neat the mosquitos had claimed ownership of it and we were forced to retreat back into some more open country.

We ended up walking about 2.5 miles of aspen regrowth clear cuts.

With the dog and kids getting pretty tired we headed for the truck. Our adventure turned up 3 nice bucks, one garder snake, and several frogs. All in all even though we didn't find the grouse this was our first trip out as a family and everyone had a good time.

Not sure how I missed this one Tony, but it looks like a great day. Even though you were shy on bird contacts, it's always good to get a dog in the grouse woods. Once we get things wrapped up with our hunts out west we'll have to get a little more serious about getting the dogs out.
