I'd say it just depends on the bullet. Would you shoot a pronghorn at close range with a .357 mag? I would and that's basically the same numbers (and I think most .30-30 bullets are designed to open at low velocities. And, he may use a bullet with higher BC. I load my son's .308 down to 2425fps with 150 Speer BTSP bullets. Other than BC, that's essentially a .30-30, but it carries antelope killing power out past 300.
Certainly further than most people shoot their lever guns, though...
