Ladies and gentlemen, question for the group. I am a currently serving Army member and love the outdoors. I am planning a group elk hunt for several friends that have given for there country. I have been fortunate enough to fill my OTC Colorado tag the past 2 years and want to give back to to fellow Vets(Brothers I went to war with). I want to give them as much of the elk hunting experience as I can and hope we might at least see elk. There injuries vary, but they all still have the heart to crawl to the top of the mountain if I told them that's where the elk were. One is missing a leg and will be depending a lot on an ATV.

We are going to be hunting public land and I have been doing some scouting trying to find suitable areas that I might be able to but these guys during 3rd season elk in southern Colorado in unit 73 and 74. It pretty nasty country and I know that is what will be holding elk just concerned about safety and getting them in the right location. Any suggestions on things like, just keep looking, find easy country and just get them in the mountains and hope we might see elk? I know it will be good for them to just get out and be men for a week but I want it to be a good hunt as well. Thank you for your suggestions.

Thanks for your service. I have been talking with these guys for about a year and there morale is in the trash. When I offer to that them elk hunting that is all they talk about now. It's only right to give the as I say the "Addictive Suck" which is elk hunting. It like a drug, and I want them to experience that in hope it let them to look at things differently. I was fortunate unenough to come back from 3 deployments with minor stuff.

What year were you in Iraq?

We were there at the same time. That place was the Wild West in 2004. Sucks brother. Sounds like you are making things happens. I'm not the greatest elk hunter either. Just lucky as all get out. What season are you hunting in CO this year?

I'm doing 2nd season. I was patrolling "IED alley" on Route Irish in Taji and getting shot at all the damned time with Scout Platoon doing convoy route recons and kicking in doors and prisoner transports. I've killed a couple of cows with a rifle, but never a bull. But, I've only been here since 2006. I retired from the Army and moved here full time in 2007. I've passed bulls during archery, but that's my own fault for not killing one. S'all good...

I was escorting fuel tanker all over. I was on Irish a lot like. Like I said I've been lucky. This will most likely be my last winter in Colorado recruiting before they move me again, but you are welcome at my fire anytime?

Big love from another broke-dick Joe here (Iraq 09-10 and AFG 12) :) I have a FB page called Veterans Hunting the West and if you go to the comments and look back through them there are a lot of resources for organizations that set up hunts for injured and disabled Vets and many state programs as well. I have been fortunate enough to go on a couple of them(hunts) and they were great. Not only for the hunts but for the time with other vets too. I am very fortunate that a fellow disabled Vet and retiree took me into his camp much like you are doing. I can't express how grateful I am. Best of luck to all!!

If we ever cross paths I owe all of y'all a drink. Can't say how grateful I am to all of you. Thank you Jeremy for showing these guys the wonders of public land elk hunting. Even if you do get skunked, there's nothing like the escape of reality when being out in the wilderness. Ain't gonna find many guys tougher than the warriors youre going with. Best of luck!!

Update! One of the great things about being a recruiter is I get to meet a lot of people in my communities. I was fortunate enough to speak with a parent of a young man I enlisted last, who happens to be an Army Vet as well. She is getting in touch with a local vet group that looks to help with things like this. Knock on wood she is going to put them in contact to see what we need to get this off the ground.

In 05 I was sitting in the recruiter's office then to Ft Lostinthewoods on Feb 22nd. I guess I am the late bloomer with Afghanistan 2012. But I am one of the lucky ones that got RTD after my Landsthul/stateside flights. I still get to work towards that March 2026 DOD retirement plan.

If you do the math there is a year of NG time so I will have 21 for pay but only 20 active.

I spent 10 days in Landstuhl. After 4 I was not considered inpatient anymore, so I got a room in the little motel/barracks. I was hanging out with some of the soldiers stationed there and was pounding krystelwiessen in the all ranks club. We'd go into town, but my jaw was wired shut, so I didn't get to sample good German food. But I did sample a little 2nd LT nurse a couple times lol

The worst part about my experience was flying out on a plane with a guy who was FUBAR. He had lost 3 out of 4 limbs and was bandaged everywhere else. He had a flight nurse that never left his side. My insignificant BS non combat injury would only require time to heal and he may not live thru the flight. It's hard not to feel guilty when other gave so much and I only had 10 months of rehab then RTD just like nothing happened. I often wonder who that guy is/was.

To the OP, I hope this trip works out and it gets thier heads in the right place. 22 a day is number we can change. The outdoors is one of the best tools I have found.

Thank you to all of you. Great to listen in on your conversations and stories. All due honor, respect, and eternal debt for what you have all done for all of us.

I have been wondering when we are all going to start the: "Get Cushman a Bull" project.

Jeremy, if nothing else works out, shoot me a PM. I have a couple of retired buddies who work in various vet support activities, and they (and I) would love to help. Thanks to all you guys for doing what you do, or have done.
