What's perfect I am getting tired of trying to find and search for my rifle favorite. My favorite shotgun 12 gauge easy I have killed lots of pheasant and deer with the 12 gauge. When dealing with rifles I have a couple 22 LR's obviously- AR 223/5.56 20 inch bull barrel -AR 6.5 Grendel-30-06 Browning Bar- 300 wsm tikka t3- Just in search of the best all around lite weight rifle that's fast and flat shooting. I put together a chart and it seems that you can not beat a 270 win. If you have a suggestion please let me know. Thanks

I went through this same dilemma...I chose the Kimber Hunter in 280 Ackley Improved shooting 150 grain Nosler E-Tips. The biggest complaint you will hear about this cartridge, is you have to hand load to achieve its full potential. But I would argue if someone is wanting the best options for their cartridge, they are reloading anyways.

How do you like that Kimber hunter? I haven't got my hands on one yet, but it's one of the lightweight options I'm considering. How does the synthetic stock feel? My apologies to the OP for highjacking the thread, trying to find my perfect rifle :)
 
There's nothing on that list that I'd not shoot something with one over another. They are all relatively variations of a theme. IMO, there are more interesting/better bullet options in 6.5 and 7mm. Depending on gun model, I'd probably choose a short action round. If you are getting another Tikka, then I'd look harder at the 270 as the actions are all the same length. In fact, 'twer I in your shoes, I'd just load the Tikka 300WSM to match the game. A handloading setup would be less than a new gun and save more $$ for tags and trips.
 
Wowee! That's a lot of numbers. If this is going to be a hunting rifle, all of those are most likely well within a normal persons margin of error while shooting at an animal. I've never walked up to an elk and thought "Huh. That bullet dropped 1.7 inches instead of 2 inches."
For what it's worth, I switched from a .300 to a .270 last year and it is the best move I've made in a while.

But, I DID marry a blonde, so I would probably change my mind if Gerald said that .270s are great.
 
The first sentence of your post said you're trying to find the perfect rifle. I'd ask you what type of hunting are you looking at doing that your Tikka 300 WSM won't cover? If you're looking for an excuse to buy a new rifle I will not be the guy to talk you out of it. My perfect rifle may be different depending on the game I'm hunting, as I fall in the category of having more rifles than I really need. I have 2 Kimber rifles, one in .300 WSM and the other in 7mm-08. I figure they will cover all my hunting needs. Since you're partial to the .270, why not pick up a Tikka chambered in it and have the same platform to hunt with.

In the grand scheme of things, the perfect rifle in My honest opinion isn't going to be found through analytics or fancy math or spread sheets or drop charts. If it was possible to do that Remington, winchester or one of the other rifle giants would have figured it out already. From the 6.5mm Chamberings on up to .30cal 95% of the calibers will work for 95% of american game and 95% of typical hunting situations. What are the intended uses for this rifle, do you handload, and is there anything that you wish was different about your .300WSM or what do you want it to do differently from your .300WSM? Is this a replacement for the .300WSM or in addition to? If I were in your shoes, I'd start with the rifle first and break down the caliber from there. Narrowing down the rifle will likely help to cull the cartridge list down some. Do you have a rifle in mind that you want?

I really like the Hunter, the stock feels better than any other synthetic in the $800 price range. Try not to compare the Hunter stock vs the Montana or Ascent. Once you compare the Hunter stock vs Winchester, Remington or Savage the Hunter wins every time IMO.

I thought the molded trigger guard would be awkward but I have noticed ZERO difference.

Thank you! This is exactly the type of information I was looking for. I knew it wasn't going to be on par with the Montana or Ascent (or any other high end composite), but wanted to know how it stacked up against other low cost synthetics. I can't stand how most of them feel. I read that Kimber wanted to reset the bar with synthetic stocks when they introduced the Hunter. It sounds like they were true to their word.
 
I suggest finding the perfect rifle first then deal with the caliber. Do you like a 20" barrel or a 24" barrel. do you like drop box or internal magazines. what kind of action do you like, controlled or push feed. do you demand a short 60 degree bolt throw. can you live with injection molded stocks or do you want a carbon fiber or fiber glass or wood. then figure out if you want a short action or long action or magnum. then choose any caliber that is suitable for the game you hunt. I recently went through 3-4 rifles before I even realized what I really wanted in my go to rifle I knew I wanted a .308 so that was the easy part. I finally have figured it out....... and I still wouldn't mind having 2 or 3 other rifles and caliber just for the fun of it.

Just want to add another Rifle I really like Tikka so probably go Tikka again. Currently I don't reload and I'm really considering a 270-7mm-08, or 260.

Use the "new gun money" to buy a handloading setup. It'll make all the rifles you do have, and any future ones, much more interesting.
