Thread: Nice crotch....

    Default Nice crotch....

Played with a couple of black ash crotches I left in the woods this winter. Ripped this chunk out with the chainsaw and ran it through the planer. This will make some nice knife grips, pistol grips or game call for sure. I'll let it dry and let the kid sell it on ebay if he wants, I'm not a wood worker, just a woods worker.

Ok woodworking guys, is this spalted maple? It's a soft maple stump.

I'm mostly used to soft woods like pine, fir, and larch. My uneducated guess would be heart rot.

Could be, but spalting is a form of rot isn't it?

For turning spalted wood of any type generally needs to be stabilized.

Soft maple just has that dark staining to the heartwood. That's why it's not worth as much as hard maple.

Not to get off topic though...
    Nice piece of ash.

I never thought I'd find myself saying this, but I'd like to get my hands on some of your crotch...

All joking aside I make knife handles and that is some beautiful wood. Let me know if your kid decides to sell some.

DaveHawk, our resident woody here would have a woodie if he saw your crotch. Guy can make a table out of sawdust almost.
