Regular v. Special

Currently 40% of the non-resident tags go into the Special allotment where the tag costs more. The odds, due to the tag being higher, tend to be better though not always. The hunting tag awarded is the same whether drawn by someone in the special or regular draw.

You can look up draw odds of the prior year on the WY G&F website to see how things went though each year is a new experiment in human behavior where the economy, number of tags, price of tags, winter kill, large trophy killed, etc can modify behavior.

75% of the NR tags for each LQ antelope or deer unit or Deer Region tag go into PP Draws and 25% into the Random Draw where no PPs are used. The tags are then split again with 60% of them going to the Regular Draw and 40% to the higher priced Special Draw. Everyone is entered into the Regular PP or Special PP Draw first depending on the money spent and then if a tag is not drawn there you get a new random number and go into the Random Draw where everyone has the same chance at the remaining tags with no PPs used. If you draw your first choice in either the PP or Random Draw, your PPs go back to zero for the following year.

If you really want a tag then the special draw is the way but check those odds. Some special tags have worse draw odds than the regular. For antelope it will generally get you a tag with a lot less PP. Fees going up next year .
