Scope for western hunting

Just trying to get your opinions. Which variable scope would you choose for hunting out west....

4-12x40 or 6-18x40?

Shots up to 500yds, mostly open country.

Of those two, the 4-12 makes more sense. You don't need 6-18 for hunting, unless you are shooting prairie dogs, or something. Actually, a 3.5-10 is plenty.
 
If it was between those two, I'd pick the 4-12. I'd feel pretty handicapped with a scope that couldn't go lower than 6x. I shot my elk this year with the scope at 2.5x. It was 80 yards away and the power was perfect. I can't imagine ever needing 18x.
 
Either will work fine. 6x is a bit of a stretch though on the low end. Why not find a 3.5-18 or the like?
