When do people usually go looking for sheds? I would love to take my 2 older kids with me and get some exercise and hopefully find some sheds.

Sheds can be found at anytime, but the "season" for shed hunting is early spring. Males have just cast their antlers and the weather is warming allowing spotting of antlers more easily. Those not found are subject to little nibblers degrading the antler and weather wet, freeze, thaw, heat etc.
Some states close areas from shed hunters to prevent late winter/early spring stress on the animals when they are at their most vulnerable health status. Check your state regs.

There is no "set" season for sheds in Idaho, as long as the animal has shed or dropped the antlers due to natural causes you can pick them up and possess them. This is the same for skulls, as long as the animal died due to natural causes you can pick it up and take it. https://idfg.idaho.gov/questions?search=SHED+HUNTING
