A friend wants me to flesh a couple of elk hides for him. He wants to have them tanned with the fur on for his son. I've done everything from beaver to stink dogs but no deer or elk. Anything special when It come to elk ? I have the beam and draw knife.

nope. just get the read meat off and salt the hell out of it. I'd fold it before it gets too hard and put a fan on it to dry down in the folds.

Ding, ding. Squeaky clean and salt. Dad used to use an old draw knife. After all the years he used it the wooden handles on both sides are still greasy. He used an old 2X10 he planned down on the sides. You should have seen a hide when it came of an animal. He was always on us to not leave flank on a hide. It should stay on the animal. Reminds me.... Need to find out who has it.
