Trying to decide between buying a new Mini 14, and outfitting it with a tactical stock, or an AR-15 (either one in 5.56mm) for a varmint rifle. Wondering if anyone has any thoughts on the distinctions.

AR hands down. Much more accurate than a mini-14.

Having sold both for years I would go with the AR platform and it aint even close. More options, a much MUCH more accurate and dependable platform. Also, investment wise, a much smarter decision. We sold the Rugers cause some folks just didnt like the "black gun" image but there is no contest as which is better.

The AR platform is VERY accurate, the Mini-14 platform, not so much.

The AR is going to cost more up front, but will hold it's value MUCH better.

My rock river arms predator pursuit is the ultimate varmint rifle IMO. Deadly accurate, 1/2" groups at 100 yards easy. Great trigger, wonderful rifle.

No comparison what so ever. AR is so head and shoulders above the mini it is not even a contest. With the AR upper options you can go smaller or larger in caliber with the same lower.
