Arizona Cardinals gave lawmakers tickets

Goal was to curry favor, team says

It's not often that the Arizona Cardinals will admit to following the Fiesta Bowl's lead.

But when it comes to courting politicians, the Cardinals stole a page from their longtime adversary's playbook.

Between 2006 and 2009, the football team said it gave dozens of state lawmakers free tickets - including premium seats in the owner's loft - to NFL games.

The goal, according to the organization: to improve its standing at the Arizona Legislature after losing battles to the Fiesta Bowl over stadium-sharing issues.

Stadium name deal: $154.5 mil over 20 years

University of Phoenix Stadium.

It doesn't quite roll off the tongue like Cardinals Stadium. But the Arizona Cardinals welcomed a deal Tuesday that gives the nation's largest private university naming rights to the football team's new stadium in Glendale.

The University of Phoenix will pay the Cardinals $154.5 million over 20 years to plaster its name on the inside and outside of the venue.

That works out to roughly $7.7 million a year, money that the Cardinals can use to beef up its budget for marquee players, make facility improvements or spend any other way the organization sees fit.

Poor bidwills... how will they survive the economic downturn:eek:
