anyone have a preferred site? I want to start learning the stock market and am thinking about penny stocks....should I just sign up to E-trade or is there another site out there that is better for a guy who barely knows what the stock market is????

Trade on paper first. It's fun and it doesn't cost you a thing! Run far far away from the "Pink Sheets" ie. penny stocks. They are penny stocks for a reason and in the long run you'll lose your shorts if you're not very careful!

DO NOT INVEST IN "PENNY STOCKS".!!!!!!

That is not "investing", that is just gambling. And, unfortunately, gambling with worse odds than the Casino will give you. Penny stocks are pimped and manipulated by boiler room brokers who run the price up, and then sell out, leaving you owning shares of crap.

You will not learn anything by trading penny stocks, other than how to lose money, and get a bad taste in your mouth for investing.

As for where to go, Charles Schwab has the best sites and services for online investing. And, unlike E-Trade, Schwab is finanically sound and did not make all the mistakes that E-trade made on the sub-prime mortgages. You never want your broker to have its' own financial problems. (TD Ameritrade would be a second option if you don't like Schwab.)

If you want to learn, start reading up on ETF's (Exchange Traded Funds), you will get diversification, low cost, low fees, and you will have the opportunity to learn the mechanics of buying and selling stocks.

thanks for the advice...so, even if I was just looking at extremely short term "investing" with the penny stocks you guys would shy away from it?

I had someone else recommend TD also, what does Charles have over TD?

Thanks again for the info.

I used to do it a lot on ameritrade, but the year end tax work was a pain in the ass so I just play with my 401K instead.

I'm getting closer to dropping some $ and taking the plunge....I found a site called investopedia.com and it seems to have a lot of useful information including simulated stock trading...anyone ever use this?
