Compared to deer and elk that is.
I ground that little lope I shot up all into burger cept for the backstraps. Had a couple hamburgers yesterday and thought they were as good or better than the WT deer around here. Different flavor for sure but still very good.
Why have I heard a lot of guys say lope is nasty, and some say it is good? Is it the rut thing, or just meat care or diet?

A young buck or doe ranks as #1 with me. Deer is a long ways down the list for me.

I've had a couple lope that were not to good, but for the most part I'd say 90% of them or more were very tasty. The steaks/roasts are fantastic on the grill, marinat in a chilpolte sauce, and a little oil of some sort to keep the juice in, cook to medium and enjoy. I wish there was more meat on one.

If it is in summer sausage it is very good...but any other way it tastes like a mouth full of sage to me. Yuck!

Some of the best venison you can have. I just butchered on last night.

I have had one very very bad one out of around 30 or so of them. But the rest have been great. Much better flavor than typical (deer) venison, and usually very very tender.

first ... you find a Lope... then you drop your drawers and sneak on the lope. You get behind it and put it in a choke hold and cover it's mouth... then you.... OHHHHH you said "Rate".... My bad

Taken care of properly (and there is no reason not to IMHO) I like it better than most deer meat....except a few MT alfalfa does I've shot.

The yahoos that drive around with them in the back of their truck all day looking for the "next one" deserve to have them taste like chit!

Worst and best.......
Biggest buck I've taken was by a wide margin the most horrible big game I've ever eaten........
Oldest (toothless) buck was the absolute finest big game flesh ever to pass over my lips.

Mooseman, I think you stayed on the Mountain a Day too Long!! John:D

We took alot of Video of Antelopes Banging Doe 'Lopes. When I got back my wife said I watched to much 'Lope Porn in the field with the stuff I wanted to do when I got back ;)

My dad got some Lope meat from a buddy in Nebraska; he threw some in spaghetti a few years back during hunting season and it was out-freaking-standing. A moderately spicy meat and kicked the spaghetti/sauce nicely.

Referring to the sausage itself or the "stuff" ? (which I believe is being used as a verb) :D

Lope Meat

I have found there are two key points to good Lope meat. First one must skin the Lope out within the first hour or two after it is sent to the happy hunting grounds. The second and perhaps most important point is to some how cool down the meat ASAP. It is generally warm during most Lope seasons and the sooner one can cool down the meat the better it will taste later. Use game bags and keep the meat clean and the flies off. I have never had a bad one and in our house the Lope meat is the first to go after hunting season ends. Vintago-heading to Wyoming Lope hunting again-out......................
