For almost the past month I have been hitting the mountains down the road preparing myself for this year's sheep, goat, and bear hunt in Alaska. However, everytime I am out I get this scratchy throat, runny nose, and irritation. I want to say it is from the sage brush and dust in the area. If so, is this why I see all these "cowboys" strutting around with these fancy hankies tied around their neck? To wipe the sweat from their brow and cover their nose and mouth from this potent air?

Cough, cough...

The scarves serve several purposes - smart guys wear silk ones. They can be used to keep dust out of your mouth and nose, can be used as a sweatband around your foreheard, can be wet and put on or wrapped around your head for cooling, and they keep your neck warm in the winter like a muffler. I'm sure I've missed a few uses - like wiping up when you forget your TP!

Pretty good answer Cali. Makes sense to me. I think it is like Del said, allergies. I have had friends come out here from the east and end up the same way. My horse gets like that this time of year too. His nose constantly runs from the dust in the air.

I get the same thing here. If it's real dry, like it was a few weeks ago, I get sneezing fits that last up to 2 minutes. I'm usually OK after that tho. If it's to bad try some of the over the counter hay fever meds, it may help get you through the day. Once it starts raining it's not so bad.

Mtn Home is right in the middle of allergy country. Lots of sage, dust, and agriculture and plenty of wind to transport the pollen.

Get a prescription for either Allegra or Viagra. Both have the same effect on allergies....

Thanks guys...I never really thought about being allergice to it, as I was always told I wasn't allergic to anything. Gonna try and cover up the airways more to prevent this. Chalk up one more reason AK is better than ID!

I've always Used the Silk scarf in the bedroom.. BUT hey, To each their own

Ovis, Seeing anything when You're out ?

Moosie

No need for a silk scarf when I have silk sheets on the bed.

Only thing I have seen are a few mulies. What concerns me is what I am not seeing. I've been hitting the mountains in the late evening when I can escape this 10,000 degree temps, which means I am coming down off the mountain with very little or no light. I didn't have things like snakes to worry about in AK.

How is your mountain trekking coming along?
