My dad first drew an antelope tag in the early 80's in Oregon so I was too young to tag along. I drew one in high school around 94 or 95 but wasn't able to go due to fires in the unit. My dad retired in 2003 and his shop guys got together and bought him his dream rifle a MarkV stainless 240 Weatherby as a retirement gift. My dad and I drew together in 2005 but a heart attack for him and an Iraq deployment for me prevented us from going and Oregon refused to reinstate points because we didn't send the proper paperwork in time. My dad's health declined and a few more heart attacks forced him to stay out of elevation and slow down in life so he gave up hunting around 2010. I settled in Montana six years ago after getting out of the Army and I've gone 5/5 with Montana antelope bucks. I couldn't be more fortunate to live where I live and have these opportunities to hunt. Last Summer while visiting my parents my dad gifted his fired 40 times or less 240 to me specifically to shoot an antelope before he "croaks". The rifle quickly got a scope upgrade and handloaded 80 grain Barnes when I got home. I was able to connect opening morning after passing up several smaller bucks. Dad just turned 83 in December and I sent him a box of homemade antelope pepperoni and summer sausage. He was pretty excited that rifle finally got some use. May of 2025 that 240 along with a 300 win is going to Africa with me. Hopefully he sticks around long enough to see the results of that hunt.

Amazing story, hits home with me. Make sure you make as many memories with your Dad as you can. My dad passed away this year and I will be taking his rifle on my next antelope or deer hunt.
