    Bluewing Teal

An overcast day, so the light was not great, but this bluewing was posing nicely here in western Montana.

3 drakes from this morning. I assume a hen is on a nest nearby and they are competing for her?

    Canvasbacks

My first 2 banded ducks were both from Ruby Lake NWR, Shot a banded can at Bear River NWR in Utah, and a week later shot a banded redhead from Ruby Lake NWR at Bear River NWR. The only banded teal I've shot was a greenwing at Minto Flats near Fairbanks, that teal was banded down the Yukon at...

    Canvasbacks

The first banded Canvasback I shot was banded in Ruby Lake Nevada. I shot that Can at Bear River National Wildlife Refuge in Utah in 1983. High water is good news, with much of the Rocky Mtns (including Montana) in a regional drought.

Especially grilled over alder coals instead of mountain house. These photos were from yesterday's Montana refuge hike...

Still some cans every morning. Low light so my cheap camera could not capture good photos.

    Canvasbacks

I hike a refuge every morning and on the hike back to the pickup, I pick up litter. This drake can was curious about my white litter bag. Unfortunately there was not enough light in the early morning.

    Canvasbacks

It is still a 2-can limit (6 in possession) up in interior Alaska, but since the season opens Sept 1 and freeze up is typically early to mid October, we rarely see them as colored up as those two drakes in Colorado.

    Cinnamon Teal

After spending the past 30 years in interior Alaska, I've enjoyed the diversity of spring waterfowl in Montana I did not see in Alaska (Cinnamon Teal, Wood Duck, Herons, even Coots and Ruddy Duck)
