Prepping hides to be tanned
Are you planning on tanning the hides yourself? Iodine won't necessarily hurt. It may leave little purple stains on the skin, which wouldn't be good on buck skin. Lay them out flat on an incline and salt them. Make sure you salt all the way to the edges. Don't roll or fold them yet...- trevore

A REALLY bad day !!!
I'm in the business. Things like this can and do happen. It very well could be a mishap. Tags come off get mixed up etc. But his reaction makes me think he knows very well that isn't your animal. I see it all the time. -

Cape off skull
the best recipe is practice. get to know a local taxidermist and offer to prep skulls and skin/cape animals in exchange for teaching you how to cape an animal. I use a 3 1/4 paring knife by victorinox for caping. the blade on the havalon will work, but i usually end up breaking them. great for... -

rattlesnake avoidance class for dogs
Some of the guys I know down in South Texas put their tracking dogs through the "avoidance" class. It definitely works. Those dogs avoid them like the plague after the first run. It's saved quite a few very valuable dogs. If my lab was a working dog, it would be worth it.- trevore
