Rocky Mountain Goat
The shaggy beasts of the icey wind-blown pinnacles of the western mountains are unique in all aspects - their color, their habitat, and the nature of how a goat hunt occurs. Any hunter wanting physical challenge and opportunity to hunt in some of the most impressive terrain in the world, need look no further than a Rocky Mountain Goat hunt.
These goats inhabit the high alpine areas of all the western states, with the exception of Arizona, California, and New Mexico. Alaska is home to the largest number of goats and the largest sized goats. Unfortunately, Alaska requires non-residents to hire a guide, making goat hunting out of reach for the non-guided hunter.
Great goat hunting can also be had in any of the states that have limited entry draws in the lower 48. The state offerring the most non-resident goat tags would be Montana, closely followed by Colorado. Idaho has the best drawing odds for the On Your Own goat hunter. In addition to those states, non-resident hunters can find great trophies in Wyoming, Washington, and Nevada.
Goat hunting is probably the most physically demanding of all big game hunting. Even more so than sheep hunting. The terrain is extreme, often combined with terrible weather conditions. The quality of your goat hunting experience is often determined by the level of condition you have invested in yourself.
