Non-hunting areas in California for elk calling and scouting practice?
I don't expect anyone to give up their hunting spots, so happy to keep this to just areas where hunting isn't allowed. I'd like to find some areas in northern california where there are good elk numbers to go out and practice my scouting and calling. Closer to SF would be more convenient, but...- zpearo

Hi all, Have hunted since I was little. Mostly whitetail in Illinois. Now doing elk in Wyoming and getting into other western hunting too. And lots of time fishing and spearfishing as well. -

Coleman has always done well enough. I've never tried one for days in 90+ degree heat, but I doubt I'll ever need that- zpearo

What is a good rule of thumb to use for magnification vs distance when hunting (i.e. how much of the sight picture should the animal take up in your scope)? In general for whitetail hunting I have cranked the magnification up to the 9x max on my scope for just about any shot where I had time to...
