Right, but at least part of the intent is still to shift some of the rut-hunting, Turkey day deer slaying tradition pressure to whitetails rather than mule deer, correct? Plus I often see suggestions that folks should stock up on whitetail b tags if they just want meat, etc etc. There just seems...
Getting something concrete to start the discussion is one of the hardest parts of the process IMO, so many thanks to the group for doing the hard work. I am optimistic about much of this proposal.
I’m hopeful that some of these changes will reduce the crowding. That, and the accompanying hunting...
I’ve been on hiatus, contemplating whether HT is worth the bother any more. Then I read this story. You are a gifted and compelling story teller. Thank you so much for sharing.
There are 4 other refuges, over a dozen WPAs and two conservation areas with conservation easements to be administered. The Bison Range was just the most visible piece of a larger refuge complex.
That said, I’m not sure putting new facilities on a WPA is the best nor most fiscally responsible...
Reposting your tables @Oak because they deserve to be seen again.
The fact that several NR on this very thread can look at these numbers, coupled with the drastic increases in NR demand over the same time period, and then keep right on trucking with the “I don’t get enough opportunity”, is...
So, as is often the case, there are many related viruses in the pox virus group, each often affecting a different species or group of animals. Orf is in the same Parapoxvirus genus as some others that affect deer, cattle, and other hooved animals globally. Orf virus itself is probably less well...

Thoughts I guess are:
Wolves were coming anyway. Reintroduction simply advanced the timeline.
The complete lack of any type of plan for management once “recovery” is...
Yep, just your run of the mill keyboard warrior. I’ve never done anything remotely useful for wildlife.
Too busy typing on my warrior keyboard to have any clue what podcast you are referencing. Was that supposed to hurt my feelings? 🤷🏻♀️
I’m out. This is going nowhere, as usual. Thinking a...
That’s great Doug. Glad you aren’t just sitting on here complaining. Hope some others follow your lead.
But I hope you can also appreciate, from the other side, how absolutely frustrating it is to see a ton of keyboard warriors virtually copy-pasting hundreds of almost verbatim, fairly...
Well Doug, yes, you could throw up your hands and exclaim we’re screwed.
Or you could put your money where your mouth is, buckle down and fiercely engage in the current system as many experienced and well-versed posters have described in detail. Your call.
@Ben Lamb @Schaaf @Big Fin @Gerald...
Prevalence in does is lower, so perhaps folks who are really just in it for the meat will just be more likely to shoot does than bucks. Obviously that presents its own problems.
Several states have reported fewer hunters hunting in positive zones once prevalences reach higher levels. Not sure...
