Hello, a friend and I are looking to do a DIY Spring bear hunt in mid to late May of 2017. I know it a long ways away but Neither one of us has ever been out west and he has never bear hunted. I shot a bear when I was 17 in Canada but would rather not hunt over bait again! We are both in our early 20's and in decent shape. We live in WI and its quite a long trip, and I was hoping on getting the opinions of the veteran MT bear hunters! Like I said we don't have any idea what we're doing out there, so a little push in the right direction would be great. When I have a destination picked out I will contact the FWS to get maps and other information. Anyone have any suggestions on areas where we will have the greatest chance for success?

yep NW Montana, lots of bears and lots of roads and gated roads to walk.
there are Grizzly up here too, so keep that in mind when you are looking at a bear through the scope!

If you can camp out i would take a look at Hungry horse reservoir.
Either side of the reservoir is good.
Check on snow pack but you should be ok at the end of May.
Endless amounts of scenic country in good bear habitat.
