I love Northern Michigan. We made our annual pilgramage to the Wife's homeland. Her family has a cottage on a lake outside of Traverse City that's full of some pretty nice-sized smallmouth bass. As an avowed fly-flinger, I do feel a little dirty dragging minnows and worms across a lake, right up until I get the tug.

5 more days of this:

I have great memories of fishing that lake, but for slab gills. I can't believe you are catching stinky, slimy bass when there are hand sized delicious bluegills in there. Hope you guys have fun this week.

I had two hits that felt like gills, but the population is down considerably according to the family. Water is up in the lake, so at least there's some better habitat for spawning, etc for them.

Very nice! I've yet to every catch a smallmouth. I should make an effort to correct that...

They're a ton of fun on a fly rod as well as a spinning rig. Pretty tasty too. We ate three of them tonight.

Looks like great times. My kids learned how to catch smallies this summer and they loved every minute of it.

That is some beautiful area. I was up there a couple of weekends ago for a wedding and it just makes me want to move back to Michigan.

It's a pretty swell spot on the map. I could see living here for a bit, but I get claustrophobic in the closed canopies. I like being able to see beyond 50 yards. :D

I was a little surprised at the increase in a NR fishing license. $77 for the season, for all species. IT was about 1/2 that last year. Apparently the DNR combined all licenses? Oh well, it goes towards the cause & it's still comparable to what a NR MT fishing license costs.

How do the NR deer tag prices compare?? ;)
