I use big fencing spikes with a flat washer to hold the loops. I don't know why the military ones wouldn't work, so long as they are sturdy enough to withstand being hammered into rocky ground?

I use the 9 inch and the 12 inch depending on the terrain, the 12`s are good for sandy soil and the 9`s are great for harder ground, and the weight doesnt matter as long as they hold.

I just 10 and 12" spikes (basically large nails), run about a $1 a piece.
