My dad and uncle and I are doing a drop camp this year in
Unit 45 second rifle and we are looking for any advice anybody may have in this unit. We are all in good shape and ready to go deep. We are coming from Wisconsin and this is our first time elk hunting. Any advice specific to this unit is appreciated!

There's a lot of elk and it's beautiful country. The hunting's not easy in 45 though. The country is high and steep. There's a lot of dense timber in the mid elevations where those bulls will seek safety after the rut ends and the snow starts accumulating up high. I'd study your maps and try to identify sheltered pockets of feed where an elk might be able to fill his belly without exposing himself much. The fact that you guys are doing a drop camp is a good idea since you should be leaving the bulk of the hunting pressure behind. Be prepared for all types of weather. Winter comes early there some years. That country is fun to hunt. Not many big bulls but a lot of elk and you earn them in a beautiful setting. Enjoy yourselves! Best of luck
