When given the chance, I will turn any vacation (From Texas to Colorado in this case) into a scouting or hunting trip. My son drew a youth pronghorn tag (Units 41-43, 46-48, 54-59) in New Mexico, so we persuaded my wife and others in the family to tag along as we went on a scouting adventure. As you probably know these tags cover a large amount of area for the youth hunt. This area is so vast we decided to focus on units 54-59 (If someone has additional experience I would like to hear their feedback on this choice.) for this particular scouting trip. I feel that I might have covered 1/10th of the units above, but saw some nice antelope. We also continued scouting all the way through colorado and saw some additional animals as well. Just thought I would share as we are all getting ready for the season ahead. I hope you enjoy and happy hunting.

When is your son's hunt? My daughter has a youth hunt in GMU41 in Sept. Was he not assigned a specific ranch? Unless it is for the October hunt or an archery hunt he should have received a ranch assignment.

I'm heading to that area this weekend to scout a camping location and see what I can see for antelope for my August hunt. I talked to the rancher for my assigned ranch a couple weeks ago and he said it has been extremely dry. Praying the monsoons kick it for the next month and fatten up the speed goats a little.

Should be a lot of fun. My son had a NM antelope tag when he was ten. We had a ball. Bring plenty of bullets.

My sons hunt is October. I called the NMGF office and they stated that we could hunt any of the units listed and would not be assigned to a specific ranch. Unless I didn't hear them correctly I believe that is the case.

Well I can tell you that it is dry. They got some rain while I was there, but I believe it was north of 41.

Good luck on your daughters hunt mcelweed.

Nope, if its October you heard him right. They open up the October youth hunt to the entire area (all selected units). My hunt is in the western part of GMU 59. I'll let you know how it looks this weekend and my hunt results in Aug. There are a lot of antelope in NE New Mexico. I'm not sure how accessible public land is up there because I was assigned a ranch. There are national grasslands, so I would focus scouting there unless you have a contact on one of the ranches. Good luck.
