What are the odds of encountering a grizzly in Unit #1 on a backcountry camping trip for black bears?

High enough you better be able to distinguish between the two. There are definitely grizzlies in Unit 1 in Idaho. Closer you get to the Montana line, the more there are, closer you get to the Washington line the fewer there are. But I've seen them in both Washington and Idaho within 5 miles of either side of the line.

good info to know, I am thinking about a spring hunt in there this year as well and was wondering about the odds of seeing a griz.

Thanks for the input, hopefully I see more black bears.

You'll see more black bears for sure... since I've never seen a grizzly in there (hunting all around Priest Lake) and maybe 50 blackies... the odds have got to be low to see the griz. But yes, they are there...

Very broad question...at what elevation does the snow typically hang on in early to mid May?

South slopes 4000 +/- north slopes 3000+ ,N of bonners ferry & yes you will see grizzys along Idaho/montana border at higher elv., I live there & seen more grizzy than blacks last year!!
