View Full Version : Hunting Video! Want to see?

Guys and gals,
I just put together a video on some of my hunts this year (DVD Format). It has somewhere around 6-7 kills with some other still pictures added to it. This is my first attempt at videoing and editing all of it, so don't expect anything fancy. It runs a little over an hour long.
Any advice to better it would be appreciated. Besides the tripod, better quality video, etc... It's dang tough in hunting situations to do all that but I'll try. :( I may look into getting a better camera this year if I decide to play with this a little more.
So this is what we will do. Kind of the same format at Schmalts did with his DVD. We will start a list here of the people that want to view it. I will send a copy out to the first guy on the list and then it will be his responsability to send it to the next guy, all the way down to the last guy. Just like Schmalts we will start out with the regulars first so the guys with 100+ posts will get first crack. After that anyone is available as long as they are registered here. Let's try to keep it moving as best we can.
Hope you enjoy,
Moosie

All I have to say is this editing chit is for the birds. This dam video has been a pain in my arse for the last month. Which includes losing hours of editing time with lockups, unable to open the projects, switching programs, etc. Just tonight I put in a perfectly good dvd and about 30 minutes in it starts skipping. I played this same dvd yesterday and it worked fine. I about came un-glued. I put in another that was also checked yesterday and it was fine. Only difference was a dvd label I created and put on the dvd. You guessed it that little sticker caused the damn thing to f-up. I wish I new that 2 days ago when I threw away 8 freshly burned dvd's (with new labels) in the trash because I thought my recording speed was to fast. |oo Anyway no cool labels on the dvd but atleast it should play. I'll get it sent out tomorrow if MT gets me his addy before the post office closes.
Later,

BIG bulls.... Big Bucks..... Moutain air and Pickup trucks !!!!
I actually only seen the Intro, but it was cool to see. I'm going to watch the rest today...As I spend the day Sitting around doing nothing !!!!!!!!!! YAHHHHH !!

Well I got the critics review from Moosie today. He couldn't believe I sent out something so chitty. He said the narration sucked. I couldn't agree more. I tired using a microphone.. Bad idea.. I was almost just going to use subtitles in a lot more places then I did but I decided actually narrating some parts might be better. Obviously not!!! :BLEEP: :BLEEP: Moosie did say the only thing that saved it was that he was in it.

HAHA.. I didn't go that far, But the sound is the ONLY thing lacking in my opinion. I think the editing , the fades, the slow shots, (ME), ;) , and seriously everything else was good.
The sound went from you couldn't hear it to me jumping for the Remote not to wake the neighbors.
The other coment I have (Since I'm on the "box") is the NM hunt. You should have gotten some of Brandons footage too. I wobbled the camera on just prior to the Kill shot but then when you fade to the Pictures I think my picture was up first then your buck. For someone that didn't know we had 2 tags it might have been confusing ? Anyways, Since I know you're sensitive about it I'll log out now :D

I saw the vid one night (actually morning) after work....3 AM, and I didn't fall asleep. Somehow I think the spring bear tracking was staged.... HA HA HA!!! Everyone should enjoy it quite a bit. Dang, that SOB IdahoBugler shot a lot of chit last year. My favorite part was the blood gushing rifle elk and the nearly dead tree from Steve's archery deer hunt. Good Times!!!!!!!!!!

Out of curiosity what program did you use to edit the video? What kind of camera?

Out of curiosity what program did you use to edit the video? What kind of camera?
I won't answer for IdBugler, but I can tell you that I have had this discussion with him.
For other videos, I currently am using Pinnacle SE 9.4x and although it is pretty easy to do simple things with, I am not overly impressed with the creativity allowed, and many projects get "hung" when rendering the movie, requiring a re-start, or a removal of content until you find what is mysteriously hanging the project.
I did 2 videos recently with Still photos, Video, lots of transitions, lots of music, and 1 hour running times, on a iMac running iMovie from Apple. I loved it, and it worked well, never having the problems that the aforementioned PC running Pinnacle SE had.
I just did another Pinnacle video, and again remain unimpressed with the Pinnacle and PC solution.
I have heard good things about Sony Vegas, but if I need to do more, I might just break down and buy an Apple.

Sorry I missed your question until I read Gunners post. Anyway I used PowerDirector5. Wasn't inmpressed at all. Had the same problems Gunner had. I just fought through the problems and found it easier to add all the video first then go back through and add the transitions and titles and cool stuff. After I finally got a copy some what done something hosed my project again and I lost the ability to open it up. So after that point it was done. I wish I could of edited it more but I wasn't about to waste a chit load more time and start over.
The camera I used was just a little Panasonic GS14. I wish I had the coin to drop on a better one but that will have to do for now.
IB
I didn't think the video was bad at all. You definitely have the voice (cool narrating job) and I think once you start getting more tape you're gonna be one busy dude cutting it. Good luck with it all, as well as this next hunting season. Thanks for allowing me to check it out.
On another note, I pm'd TheTone yesterday requesting his address, but haven't received a response as of yet. I'm heading out of town Friday and will not be back until Monday. I'd like to get this in the mail to someone before the weekend. Do you want me to pass it off to the next guy after TheTone or sit on it for a few more days?

04-13-2006, 01:38 AM
To JoseCuervo I have got a new mac with the intel chip and love it. I do a lot of editing video and havent had any problems whatsoever. If you have the money get Final Cut Pro HD it is the best out there, but iMovie still gets the job done without any problems. If anybody is interested in letting me edit some video I would love to put your hunts on DVD. I need the experience with the editing for my resume.
As far as cameras go I need to invest in one of my own here soon, which models have been tough enough to take hunting the west?

Sent it out to T-bone today as instructed by WH because t-bone got skipped.
My review.... I liked it a lot. A few things i will comment on that i thought could be improved. First the sound quality of the beginning song was wierd. Sounded like it came out of a transister radio or something.
I think the slide show in the beginning was a bad choice as it gave away a lot of the story before hand. I would rather have seen it in the end as a re-cap.
I thought it was way cool that you had enough time and effort to take the camera out that much. One question, When your team took the double bow shot on the deer was it just the angle or was one guys bow a lobber and the other one a lazer? I seen one arrow arch in and over and the other one was like a death beam barely visable. The moose hunt was my favorite, i think just seeing your Pop so stoked made it real cool.
Great job all together. I hope i have a chance to make another one and use the opinions given on yours and my home brew DVD's for improvement

Thanks schmalts. Ya I agree a lot to be improved and those are good points. Thanks for the suggestions. I never intended on anyone but family seeing it so they all knew what I had shot already. The song in the beginning was recorded from a dvd so I just recorded through a microphone as you can tell. That was the hardest thing about this dvd was the sound. It was tough and hopefully I can get better at it. I just have to get better software.
The bow shot you were talking about was kind of misleading because I was over the shoulder on the guy that looked like the arrow lobbed in. My dad was to my right about 40-50 yards and so the angle was different. You could'nt see his arrow until it was right in the frame so it looked faster.
The moose hunt was dubbed a lot. He was even more stoked then what the dvd shows. On his first fatal hit he just started yelling, "Now that was a fu*&ing hit, That was a fu&*ing hit." I had to take it out since family might be watching. Also there was other dubbing involved in most of the video. The one where Steve shot at the spike and missed I started telling get a fu&*ing arrow, hurry hurry. I didn't think people would enjoy that very much. Maybe next year I'll make an unsensored copy.

IdahoBugler, thanks so much for sharing this DVD of your hunts with us. It was cool to "tag along" on some hunts that I have never gotten to do yet and hope to have a chance to see this year's edition when you are done with it. Some cool footage and some great critters in their!

Yeah, my wife tells me that sometimes too. ;)
Figured after jumping the line, the least I could do was to get it to you as quickly as possible.
It should be in the mail within the hour.

Ok I got the DVD last night and watched in right away (much to the wifes dismay, since it was during dinner), and I've got to ask... IDBugler, how do you still have a job? Seems you must have spent 3 solid months hunting!?!
Great video, thanks for sharing!!!
The wife says next year, avoid standing in the wind so much... ;)
So, who's next? Give me an address and I'll get it off to the mail.
